Language Courses

The list is not exhaustive, more online courses can be found on google. To search in your city, I recommend opening Google Maps and typing "Sprachschule". That way you can find language schools near you.

VHS Volkshochschulen

The Volkshochschulen are partially state-funded educational institutions. One of the tasks of these schools is to teach foreigners German and to offer integration courses. In addition to languages, it is also possible to learn other kinds of labour education there. The cost of the courses is usually considerably lower than those on the market. Due to the high demand, it is difficult but not impossible to enroll in these courses. The enrollment procedure varies from land to land, so I recommend reading the information on the official website.

Each land has its own VHS website:

Integration Courses

The German government sponsors integration courses. It is a combination of a language course and an orientation course on the basics of life in Germany. The duration varies from 430 to 1000 academic hours. I highly recommend taking these courses if you have the opportunity. You will get certificates confirming your knowledge of German and the basics of life in Germany, the time needed to apply for citizenship will be shortened and you will have a good opportunity to understand the details of the German social and living systems.

For more information on content, costs, and enrollment options, visit the official BAMF website (available in English). Note: BAMF is very fond of changing the structure of the site and breaking links. If the link above does not open, try the BAMF homepage and find "Integrationskurs" there.
